It stops the door.
A stop moulding is the trim that prevents the door from closing past the frame. It runs along the top and both sides of the opening.

It is a working component of the frame, but the bevel adds a subtle detail rather than a flat strip of wood.

D04 comes 1 3/8″ wide in 7′ sticks; D05 is 1 3/4″ wide in 10′. Pick the width that suits the jamb and the casing.
D04 — 1 3/8″ × 7′.
