How Long Does Flooring Installation Take? A Room-by-Room Guide
"How long will the installation take?" is one of the most common questions we get when booking flooring projects. It's a fair question — you need to know whether to take a day off work, whether you can stay home, and how long your furniture will be displaced.
Here's an honest, realistic guide based on what our installation crews actually complete in a day across Kitchener-Waterloo homes.
The Main Factors That Affect Duration
Before getting to specific timelines, here's what actually determines how long your installation takes:
- Square footage: Obviously the biggest factor.
- Product type: Floating LVP and laminate install faster than nail-down hardwood. Tile is the slowest by far.
- Room shape and obstacles: Lots of doorways, angles, columns, and awkward shapes slow everything down. Open rooms with few obstacles go fast.
- Subfloor condition: A flat, clean subfloor allows immediate installation. Levelling, patching, or preparing a damaged subfloor adds significant time.
- Removal of existing flooring: If we're removing carpet, LVP, or hardwood, factor that in separately.
- Stair work: Stairs are labour-intensive and add significant time.
Typical Installation Times by Room
Bedroom (150–200 sq ft)
LVP or laminate: 2–4 hours. Carpet: 2–3 hours. Hardwood: 3–5 hours. Most bedrooms are done in a morning or afternoon — not a full day.
Living Room or Dining Room (250–400 sq ft)
LVP or laminate: 4–6 hours. Hardwood (floating): 5–7 hours. Carpet: 4–6 hours. An average living room is typically a full day's work including prep.
Kitchen (150–250 sq ft)
LVP: 3–5 hours. Tile: 1–2 days (tile requires mortar cure time before grouting). Kitchens are slower than living rooms due to appliances, cabinets, and irregular shapes.
Bathroom (50–100 sq ft)
LVP: 2–3 hours. Porcelain tile: 1–2 days (mortar + grout cure time). Bathrooms are small but have many obstacles — toilet, vanity, tub surround — and tile installations require waiting for the mortar to cure before grouting.
Basement (500–1000 sq ft)
LVP: 1–2 days for a typical finished basement. Open spaces go quickly; rooms with many doorways and utility areas slow things down. Subfloor preparation (levelling concrete, vapour barrier) can add a partial day.
Whole Home — Main Floor + Stairs + Bedrooms
Most whole-home projects with LVP or laminate across 1,200–1,800 sq ft take 2–3 days. Hardwood projects of similar scale typically take 3–4 days. Tile throughout would be longer.
What Can Cause Delays
- Subfloor levelling needed (concrete humps, dips, or damaged plywood)
- Hardwood that wasn't acclimated before installation day
- Furniture that wasn't cleared from the rooms
- Discovery of asbestos-containing materials under old tile (very old homes)
- Moisture issues that require addressing before installation
We check for these during your estimate so we can flag anything that needs to happen before installation day. The estimate visit is genuinely useful — not just for pricing, but for catching issues that would otherwise cause delays.
What to Expect on Installation Day
Our crew typically arrives between 8–9am. For a single-day project, you can expect the floor to be done and walkable by 3–5pm. For floating floors (LVP, laminate, floating hardwood), you can move furniture back the same day. For glue-down LVP or tile, you'll need to wait 24 hours for full cure before moving heavy items.
We'll give you a specific timeline estimate when we quote your project. Call 519-279-8456 or book a free in-home estimate to get started.
